OUR first ever ADULT ONLY hike is being offered tonight Feb 11, 2012 … just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Program will have adult content – we wouldn’t have to find the PG words for… well… You know.

Program starts at 7pm sharp at the park store/ rink. Find the blue program sandwich board.

We go on a short walk and then arrive at a semi-heated shelter where we will enjoy a presentation by Andrew Cirtwill the Park Natural Heritage Education Leader. After the Presentation we will continue our walk – hopefully finding some owls, deer and other cool animals that make Bronte Creek Provincial Park .. home.

Dress for the weather (snow boots, hat and mitts--- warm coat). My Mom always said better to have tooo much clothing than not enough. Layers are key. (thanks Mom).

Price is just entry fee to park… not registration required.

NO dogs please.

What are the chances that we would be Lucky enough to capture this on camera!! We all were so over the moon that these 2 bucks happen to choose this spot to have their 45 sec. sparring match. They aren't big bucks but they are equally matched. I wonder what they were fighting about?

We have just one more weekend left of the HOMESTEAD Christmas event! Things are going along great! last year we had 91 families, this year 180 families will enjoy a tour of the farmhouse, crafts and refreshments served from the wood burning stove AND private family visits with the BIG GUY! Coyote Howl and Family Skate on NEW YEARS EVE!

DEC 31, 2011 spend the evening skating to music under the starry sky, warm up around a campfire while sipping hot chocolate. Join a Park Ranger for a guided walk --- Coyote Howl! Bronte Creek Provincial Park - Coyote hikes and howls

Hearing Coyotes yip and howl while camping at most Provincial Parks is a common occurrence. It is not unusual to hear them howling at dusk or even 11pm at night. Bronte Creek Provincial Park due to its urban setting has developed a reputation for a good spot to hear coyotes.  The park Natural Heritage Education staff have been offering guided Coyote Howl hikes for over 10 year with about a 75% success rate.

Seeing a Coyote is more rare although it depends alot on when you visit a park and where you go in the park. Frequent visitors to Bronte Creek Provincial Park will most likely have a story to tell you about their experience.

Some of our 4 legged visitors have had close encounters with a coyote while visiting the park. All of these experiences have taken place in one of 2 leash free areas (use at your own risk).

This blog entry will give you some insight into my many encounters with the park coyotes.

Coyote:
     Weight: average 18-20KG or 38-45lb
     Height: 23"
     Length: 23" without tail

Coyotes have wide, pointed erect ears and a tapered muzzle. Fur is tawny grey, darker on hind part of the back.
    Diet: Opportunistic -- eats meat and some berries. Favorite food if mice, rabbits, birds, acorns and eggs.
         Will take farm animals - usually one at a time.
    Habitat: plains, prairies, wooded areas and deserts. -- most everywhere that humans have cleared for farming. we cleared the land and pushed the wolf north and made way for the coyote.
    Breeding: mate in Feb - March, Gestation 60-63 days. 3 - 7 pups born in den. will leave den area in the fall. High rate of mortality. Keeps a mate for many seasons.

   Currently hunted, trapped, poisoned as vermin. Open season and no limit.

At Bronte Creek Provincial Park we have not specifically studied the coyote population. It does go up and down with the wild rabbit population and we know that coyotes hunting range is 9 square km. A few are killed each year on surrounding roads.

WHAT should you do if you SEE a Coyote?

If you do not what to watch it or take pictures.... make a noise to let it know that you are there and then slowly back away from it keeping your eye on it. It will most likely continue doing what it was doing before and move away from you. Coyotes will look back at you as it trots away (one of its traits which hunters use).

If you want to take pictures of a coyote or watch it. DO NOT chase or corner a coyote or for that matter any wild animal. No animal likes to be chased or trapped, they will defend themselves. Try to move around down wind of the coyote --- but make a little noise so that you do not surprise it. Enjoy watching the coyote hunt/ pounce on a mouse or chase a rabbit. Getting a photo is hard.

WHAT should you do if you have a dog?
Use of the Leash Free areas in Bronte Creek are at your own risk. Dog owners need to be in control of their dog at all times. I am a dog owner and I know how challenging this can be - but you need to be fairly sure that your dog will come back to you when called and will stay within eye sight of you. If you can not trust your dog to obey you then I highly recommend keeping your dog on a leash and using other areas of the park.

Can I still walk the Trails at Bronte Creek --- How safe is it?
Bronte Creek Provincial Park is still and has always been a wonderful area to walk morning, day or evening. Nothing has changed. When you walk -- don't use ear buds or loud music -- you need to be aware of things around you (people, bikes, dogs and other wildlife). Have a cell phone with you. Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back. It does seem funny to have to go to these lengths but really it is the same for going for a walk anywhere... you ask it of your kids and family members when they go out... don't you? Oh yeah... and stay on the trails!

The park offers Guided Coyote information walks and Howls during Camper Halloween and each New Years Eve. Plan to join us for one of those hikes.

Fall into the fun at the PARK!

Well… the kids are all back to school or soon will be for those starting JK/SK. After school activities will be in full swing --- hockey, swimming girl guides and boy scouts… we all have a busy fall and winter ahead of us.

SEPTEMBER!

° As of end of day on Labour Day the 1.8 acre outdoor swimming pool is closed for the season.

° The Nature Centre and Spruce Lane Farm house are also closed for the season.

° The children’s farm and play barn are OPEN everyday of the year (not Christmas day) 9-4

Releasing PETS into environment having deadly effects on our habitats

Prevention, early detection and rapid response are essential elements of any invasive species program and must be the focal points of all efforts - local, regional and state/ provincial - going forward.

Stop dumping “PETS” into our local environments…. No turtles, no plants, no water, no snails, no birds, no snakes…. You get the picture….

AGGRESSIVE INVASIVE PLANT HYDRILLA DISCOVERED IN CAYUGA INLET

Cayuga Lake and other regional water bodies at risk

Ithaca, NY - The highly invasive aquatic plant, Hydrilla verticillata, known commonly as 'hydrilla' or 'water thyme' was recently detected in the Cayuga Inlet by staff from the Floating Classroom. In a follow-up survey, Robert L. Johnson, a local plant expert with Racine-Johnson Aquatic Ecologists, located several areas of the Inlet with extensive populations of hydrilla. To date, hydrilla appears to be localized to the Cayuga Inlet, with no evidence that it has yet rooted in Cayuga Lake.

This is the first detection of hydrilla in upstate New York's waters, and the risk of it spreading to Cayuga Lake and other regional waterbodies is substantial. Fragments of the plant, which are easily caught and transported by boats and boat trailers, can sprout roots and establish new populations. Fragments also float and are capable of dispersing via wind and water currents.

Federal, state, and local municipal officials along with biologists from Cornell University are gathering Friday, August 19, to discuss rapid response and control options. If left unchecked, hydrilla can clog waterways; interfere with boating, fishing, and swimming; and cost millions of dollars to control.

Recreational users of Cayuga Inlet are urged to employ clean boating practices to prevent the further spread of hydrilla and other aquatic invasive species. Remove any plants, mud or debris from boats or equipment that came in contact with water. Drain any water from boats before leaving a launch area. Clean and dry anything that came in contact with water including boats, trailers, gear, clothing, dogs, etc. Never release plants, fish, or bait into a water body unless they came out of that water body.

Native to Asia, hydrilla was first introduced to the US in the 1950s when the contents of an aquarium were dumped into a waterway in Florida. It has since spread throughout much of the eastern US (from Florida to Maine) and into a number of western states. It is found worldwide on every continent except Antarctica.

Hydrilla grows aggressively, up to an inch per day, and creates a thick mat of vegetation when it reaches the water's surface. Hydrilla quickly shades out other aquatic plants, displacing native species like pondweeds and wild celery. It does well in a wide variety of freshwater habitats including canals, springs, streams, ponds, lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. Hydrilla can survive a range of environmental conditions, including high and low nutrients, acidic to alkaline waters, and high to low light conditions.

Hydrilla is a perennial plant that overwinters in northern climates by producing a storage structure, called a tuber, from roots and stems buried in the sediments. The tuber re-sprouts in the spring when conditions warm. In addition to floating fragments, the transport of tubers with sediments (e.g., dredging spoils) is another means by which hydrilla can spread to new water bodies.

Hydrilla has long slender stems that can grow underwater to lengths of up to 25 feet. Its identifying characteristics are four to eight small, pointed leaves are arranged in circular whorls along the length of the stem. The edges of the leaves are lined with sharp teeth. Hydrilla is often confused with native water weeds, particularly Elodea canadensis whose leaves typically occur in whorls of three and appear smooth-edged. It also resembles the invasive Brazillian waterweed (Egeria densa), which is found downstate in New York and has finely serrated leaves (3/4 - 1.5 inches) in whorls of 3 to 6.

Hydrilla can set seed, but primarily reproduces vegetatively via floating pieces that set roots, buds produced along the stems (called turions), or overwintering tubers.

Pool RE-OPENS after 3 day power failure.

The Bronte Creek Provincial Park 1.8 acre outdoor swimming pool is OPEN

The Halton Health Department has given us the all clear to re-open the outdoor pool after a 3 day power failure caused many of the park facilities to be shut down.

Regular hours and fees apply.

11-6 daily weather permitting

In the event of a electrical storm the pool and pool area are cleared and evacuated.

$2.00 per youth and $3.00 per adult per day.

No group rates or family rates.

We suspect a deteriorating underground cable to be the culprit that caused the park to be with phones, computers, lights and filters between August 7 - 10

The park staff have worked to restore (albeit temporary) power to all facilities. We hope that this fix will make it through the pool season (Labour Day).

Should we have another issue with any park facility ---- we will post information here… tweet and facebook the current status.

GPS session dates 2011

WOW! I am overwhelmed by the response from the GPS article in the Ontario Parks Newsletter.

SOOOOoooo due to the interest… and demand I will be offering the GPS program!!!

AT the end of the GPS session you will know some of the “lingo” and you will have the skills to mark a waypoint, track back to that way point. You will also be able to input coordinates and goto those coordinates using ethical GPS skills. At this time I do not teach mapping skills.

August 25 10am - 12pm

August 25 1pm – 3pm

August 25 6pm – 8pm

Sept 8 5pm - 7pm

The GPS program is 2 hours.

I teach the basics of HOW and WHY GPS works. There will be a “theoretical” instruction portion followed by hands-on learning.

The sessions are appropriate for grades 5 and up… if younger folks wish to attend they will be asked to share a GPS unit with an adult.

Cost is either: a seasons pass, daily vehicle permit ($16.00) or valid camping permit. --- no additional fee for the program --- but you will need to register! I need to limit the participants to 30-60 people per session.

We will supply the GPS units (garmin) for use during the session… if you have a GPS you can bring it, however it would be best to use the class set for instruction. Note that this course refers to hand held GPS units NOT the NAVIGATION systems used in cars.

Power Temporarily restored

On August 10, 2011 we have been able to restore power throughout the park. Albeit temporary.

The pool remains closed until further notice.

Campground is not affected by this power malfunction.

Should we loose power again please note that you can call the campground at 905-827-3228.

We will not be able to answer phones or emails from the day-use side.

Please know that the staff are doing all that is within their power to restore full services to the park.

Major power failure in dayuse area august 7, 2011 until future notice

There has been a major power malfunction on the day use side BURLOAK. We have limited power in some facilities and none in others.
The outdoor swimming pool is closed.
The park store and snack bar is closed.

The children's farm and barns are open with limited power.

The nature centre is open with limited power.

The gate has limited functions - best bring cash.

Day camps and picnic groups can call 905 -827-3228 keep in mind this is the campground line and only One line!!! It will be highly used.

The office has no power... No phones or computers.

The campground is not affected by this outage.

Trails are open.

Spruce lane farmhouse will be open reduced hours.

Parks are for People and garbage is for the trash cans

Hey park visitors... I usually use this blog to let you know about events and program... but I thought I would share with you some of the inside issues about trying to run a park such as Bronte Creek Provincial Park.

I recently had a visitor comment about how upset they were with the amount of garbage blowing about the day-use area of the park. NOTE: this was a hot day on the last day of a long weekend. I did my best to answer their concerns, trying to be objective.

We have garbage cans just about everywhere you look at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. We have a decent amount of recycling bins.

The park had been very busy over that Saturday and Sunday not to mention on the holiday Monday.

The park staff were having difficulty keeping up with all the trash being produced by the 3000 some picnickers.

What I don't get is why some park users consciously decided NOT to use the trash bins and drop their garbage as they see fit. Letting it blow in the wind! This is such a last-century-way-of-thinking... "the water will take the garbage away", out of sight out of mind.

I have been known to hold onto my garbage (pop can, Popsicle stick, gum wrapper) etc. for 1/2 hour or more until I find a trash can. I have also walked out of my way to use a not-over-flowing trash can. And yes I have even taken my trash home.

I would like to recommend or suggest this:

What if the park removed all but the recycling containers and ALL park visitor must PACK OUT what they packed in. --- ridiculous I know... but can you just imagine! this is what backcountry hikers and canoers must do when they use the interior of Algonquin or Quetico.

If you are planning an outing to a park --- bring along at least a grocery bag (yes I know you still use a few). Plan to take home your garbage! Maybe this way people will start to think about the amount of waste they produce.

Oh... and Dog Walkers... Just because you pick up after your dog...(when we see you) doesn't mean you get to toss your poop bag into the forest when you get around the corner!!! I know this is not the majority... but those poop bags are really an eye sore.

OAKVILLE – Bronte Creek Provincial Park Everyone wants to know if the old farmhouse is haunted. You can decide for yourself when you attend a Ghostwalk Tour of the house and barns of Spruce Lane Farm.

Discover the truth about the supernatural side of Spruce Lane Farm as we share real life stories and extraordinary evidence gathered by paranormal investigators. Listen to personal accounts from costumed tour guides as we tour through our century old buildings by lamplight.

This guided evening tour of the house and barns is not intended to be scary --- this is not a carnival show. This is an educational tour to share occurrences, beliefs and unexplained happenings in the farmhouse.

This program is best suited for ages 7 and up. 45 minutes of walking and standing is required. Buildings are NOT stroller or wheelchair friendly. Registration is required. Please Call 905-827-6911 ext 231.

Before the “ghostwalk” you can enjoy a picnic at one of many picnic tables under the shade of a tree. Children 10 and under will not want to leave the park without a visit to the Children’s Farm and Playbarn. The outdoor swimming pool is open until 6pm – additional fee applies to use the pool.

Program participation and other the facilities mentioned are included in regular Daily Vehicle rate ($16.00 per vehicle). Seasonal and annual vehicle passes are available.

Spruce Lane Farm house open Weekends

From NOW ‘til July the heritage farmhouse will be open every weekend --- enjoy a guided tour of the house or you can download an MP3 audio tour onto your own MP3 player… and listen as you tour the house.

See the newly restored wood burning cook stove.

Listen to the chime of the kitchen clock stike the hour or the half hour.

Listen to a tune on the newly refurbished phonagraph--- and early record player… or music player. Music is on wax cylinders.

See the house in the day time… then come back in August for an evening Ghostwalk (Sundays in August).

Lots to see at during each season. Come back often to see the heritage demonstrations.

Ontario Parks Launches New Learn to Camp Program

Ontario Parks is offering a new program aimed at new Canadians and others who have never camped before.

About 25 per cent of all Ontarians have never gone on an overnight camping trip; new Canadians are even less likely to have tried camping. About 74 per cent of new Canadians surveyed said that a hands-on course about camping would be helpful.

Learn to Camp offers would-be campers three choices:
• exploring online for information to help plan a camping trip
• participating in a community-based session; or
• staying overnight in one of the three provincial parks that are part of the pilot program

Web content provides tip sheets, first-time camping instructions, packing lists, booking forms for an overnight camping experience and request forms for Ontario Parks’ staff to visit community organizations.

The free community sessions are run in the afternoon or evenings, and are led by an experienced Ontario Parks staff member who will visit community groups in the Greater Toronto Area. Participants will learn about provincial parks and what they need to do to make their first camping trip a success.

The in-park program is a two-day combination of structured learning activities and free time to enjoy the park. The pilot program is being held at Bronte Creek, Sibbald Point and Darlington provincial parks – all within easy driving distance of Toronto.

The program is offered most weekends and occasionally mid-week through the summer months, at a cost of $46 for a maximum of six participants.

Campers attending the in-park program will learn:
• what equipment they need to go camping;
• how to set up a campsite and tent;
• how to build a campfire;
• food preparation and storage;
• how to be a responsible camper, such as green camping and respecting natural areas and wildlife, and
• how to be safe in parks.

Tour of Bronte --- road bike race 2011

April 9 and 10, 2011

The internal road and portions of the paved visitor roads will be used for the cycling race.

Visitors are still permitted entry to the park, although you may be asked to wait until the "pod" of cylclists pass.

Warning signs are posted throughout the park to alert visitors to stay vigilant -- the bikes move fast. They will be led and followed by cars or vans which will be honking their horns at intervals to warn you of their approach. At critical cross points volunteers will be stationed... please obey them and wait until the POD passes that section.

We ask that visitors only use the walking paths on these 2 days --- the internal road will be used by the cyclists.

Please pay attention to the race volunteers. For your safety and that of the bikers.

As always, please keep DOGS ON A LEASH! (except in marked leash-free areas).

Skating Rink Closed --- WHY?????

During the week of February 14, the Oakville/Burlington areas experienced record high temperatures, which resulted in the skating rink melting in spots and exposing the underlying concrete pad. As well, during this period the refrigeration system which maintains the ice surface temperature experienced a mechanical failure which at this time is still unresolved.
The park telephone system which provides park conditions was updated on February 18 to reflect the above situation.
The park annually budgets for the skating rink to operate until the end of February, however weather conditions or situations beyond our control can affect the operation of the skating rink.

PLEASE NOTE that the Playbarn has reopened -- roofing repairs complete.

February 24, 2011 – Canadians across the country are now competing to put their favourite location on the map in the Great Places in Canada Contest sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Planners. Bronte Creek Provincial Park has been nominated and now residents are encouraged to go to www.GreatPlacesInCanada.com and vote for the Bronte Creek and encourage others to vote.

The competition is open to everyone – just go to www.GreatPlacesInCanada.com where you can nominate, write about, and post images of the place that inspires you. And by making a nomination, you’ll be entered into a draw for prizes. Votes will be tallied in real time to make it easy to track the leading locations.

“It would be fantastic to see Bronte Creek Provincial Park win,” said Sheila Wiebe. “I encourage people to take a few seconds to vote and demonstrate their park pride to make Bronte Creek a leader in this friendly competition. It will be an exciting contest as people enlist support for their entries and attractions compete with one another.”

Nominating and voting will close March 25, 2011. A panel of judges will then select the finalists in late April, and the winners will be announced in May. Each winning location will receive a plaque, presented to the local mayor and winning nominators will also be awarded.

The Children’s Farm and Playbarn are closed for roofing repairs – effective Feb 3.

The Outdoor Ice Rink is closed due to mild temperatures and will likely remain closed. Effectively ending the rink season for 2011.

The current snow conditions are spring like… the tobogganing hill has many bare spots and the Cross Country Ski trails are in fair to poor condition – wet and slushy.

At Bronte Creek!

On Feb 2nd there will be some howl’n going on! The Park Naturalist will be leading evening hikes where visitors will learn to howl like coyotes and then gather round the bonfire for the Countdown for Kids!

Join the Park Naturalist for a guided Public Coyote Howl hike where we will uncover some secrets about the largely misunderstood coyote. Everyone is invited to gather around the bonfire at 8:30pm to welcome in the New Year during the Countdown for Kids. No additional fee to participate in New Years Eve program. (alcohol-free event).

Specific hikes times: 7pm, 7:30pm, 9pm.

The rink hours are 9:30am – 9:30pm. (weather permitting). The Park Store will be serving up hot food and no alcoholic drinks. The Park Store offers skate rentals in an assortment of sizes for both children and adults.

Children’s Farm and Playbarn are open daily 9:00am – 4:00pm throughout the winter! For more information on ice conditions, park events and facilities please call 905-827-6911.

There is no additional fee for use of the skating rink or Playbarn after obtaining a daily vehicle permit. Reduced rates for seniors and disabled permits.

The ice rink is located in the park’s DAY-USE area accessible off Burloak Drive just north of the QEW.

Even though the holidays are over... you can still enjoy the skating rink and winter recreation when conditions are right.

The OUTDOOR rink is open daily 9:30-9:30 weather permitting -- call 905-827-6911 ext 234 for a recorded message with current conditions.

There is a refridgeration system under the rink which helps to maintain the ice through milder temps. It is always a good idea to call tp see what the conditions are like before you head over to the park.

When there is snow we have hills for tobogganing and trails for skiing.

When we don't have snow...the trails are open for hiking. Remember that all pets need to be leashed!!

You can excersise your dog leash free in the leash free areas... ask the gate attendant or office staff to show you where!!!

Playbarn and Children's Farm is open daily 9-4pm. Various farm animals to visit. Play barn for kids 10 years and under.

Thanks For a Great Day!

I hope you and your staff got home safely on Sunday and were finally able to dry off and warm up.

I must say a huge thank you for such a fabulous morning and event. I think you really have something here. My entire family loved Homestead Christmas at Bronte Creek!! My husband very much enjoyed the tour of the House and the guides that provided it. They were a wealth of information and stayed “in character” while explaining what daily life and Christmas time meant for the people who originally lived in the Homestead. He, my son and I really liked the getting into character with them, when we put on the clothes-of-the-time to visit Santa. And then Santa… well he was a huge hit! My son talked all the way home about Santa asking him about baseball and karate. And, we love that we got to bring back a number of photos from our costumed visit with Santa! THANK YOU to you and all of your staff!!

New Piglets --- Born October 13, 2010

The weather is going to be pretty good this weekend... a great time to visit the park and the new litter of piglets just born yesterday.

Fall colours are still good especially by Spruce Lane Farm near parking lot F.

Salmon have been spotted in the creek along with anglers doing their best to try to catch them. The salmon use Bronte Creek for their annual spawning grounds. Usually takes place when the weather turns cold and there has been rain for a few days.

Camper Halloween is coming up on October 23. Reserve a campsite, decorate the site to possibly win a prize! Trick or treat around the campground and then join the park ranger for a hike to learn about owls and coyotes and other creepy critters.

Day visitors are welcome to join the HIKE PORTION ONLY... the hike will start at 6:30pm. Gatestaff will let you know where we are meeting when you arrive at the gate. Remember $16.00 per vehicle for day visitors.

Homestead Christmas --- reserve now for this awesome event. Your family (6 or less) will be invited into the seasonally decorated Victorian Farmhouse where you will experience some good old fashion holiday traditions. You will then be escorted to Santa's cabin where you will slip into a victorian costume for your private meeting and photo session with Santa.

Homestead Christmas approximately 2 hours, light refreshments, $10/ adult or infant under 1 year old and $15.00 per child 1-17.

A Homestead Christmas Helper will escort your family to Spruce Lane Farm where they will see where the reindeer train to become recruits for Santa’s team. Next you and your family will slip into your Victorian costumes for your private visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Your Victorian portraits captured during your visit with Santa will be yours to take home on a souvenir USB stick. Creating memories which will last a life time!

Reservations are required to enter and participate in the Homestead Christmas activities in Spruce Lane Farmhouse, Reindeer barn and the private visits with Santa. Reservations can be made starting September 1, 2010. Children are $15.00 each and adults are $10.00 each.

Reservations are NOT required to participate in the heritage crafts at Breckon Shelter.

Homestead Christmas activities are offered Saturdays and Sundays in December, plus December 20-23^rd from 10am -3pm.

Other park services and activities available during December: Hiking trails, cross-country Ski trails, tobogganing, children’s farm and playbarn. Outdoor ice rink scheduled to open December 18 weather permitting.

Construction on Burloak Drive +

Park Visitor – Attention!

Road Construction along Burloak Drive is now just in front of the park entrance.

The entrance and exit lanes to the day use area will be reduced to one lane each as part of the ongoing construction work on Burloak Dr. Work should take approx. 4 days.

A flagman should be present when this work is happening.

Please be patient --- take your time.

When I arrived at the park today (August 24, 2010) there were workers and trucks by the entrance.

Like all construction and delays… just think of how nice the road will be when it is all done.

Last Ghostwalk for 2010

Sunday August 29, 2010 will be the last Ghostwalk. Tours at 8pm and 9pm – arrive early so that tours can leave on time. Meet group at the far end of Parking lot F.

August 14, 2010 is Farm Day at Bronte Creek

Drop by Spruce Lane Farmhouse to discover some cool things about life as a farmer in the 1890's.

We will be selling pure natural honey made by the honey bees in the park.

There will also be natural soaps for sale.

Tour the Farmhouse, and try your hand at weaving. There will be plenty of other activities and chores to help with.

Everyone will appreciate the modern convienences that we have today.... but will wonder at the technology of the 1890's.

activities are go going between 12-4... just follow the special event signs to Parking Lot F off the Burloak drive side.

Parks Day Extravaganza @ Bronte Creek Provincial Park

July 17, 2010 12 noon – 4pm

Start at the Nature Centre near parking lot C

Family fun will be the name of the game on July 17^th as we encourage you to complete activities and challenges located throughout Bronte Creek Provincial Park! It will be a mixture of “The Amazing Race”, “Survive This” and “Dirty Jobs”. Families and small groups are asked to begin their adventure at the Nature Centre… the “Extravaganza” activities will be offered between 12 noon and 4pm.

Activities might include but are not limited to: Hands on Heritage, Nature Nuggets, Pond Study, Park Jobs, Be a Friend, Get to Know Your Park and Ontario Parks Are Where???

Suggested equipment: water bottles, hats, sunscreen, walking shoes, bikes and snacks.

This program takes place in the day-use area off of Burloak Drive.

Program participation is included in the daily vehicle permit ($16.00 per vehicle). Seasonal and annual vehicle passes are available.

Parks Day in Canada background

First celebrated in 1990, Canada’s parks Day is an opportunity for park staff, friends and volunteers to invite park visitors and residents of nearby communities to join in celebration Canada’s parks and historic sites from coast to coast to coast! It is a day when park agencies focus attention on major achievements, announce new parks or launch new programs or services. It is also an opportunity to raise public awareness and increase support for parks in Canada and throughout the world. Parks Day is annually celebrated the third Saturday in July.

This year is the International Year of Biodiversity as declared by the United Nations. The http://www.cbd.int/2010/about/ provides information on the initiative. The Canadian Parks Council has adopted this as our theme for 2010 and is suggesting organizing events that highlights the important role that parks play in maintaining healthy and diverse ecosystems of biodiversity. Weekly summer activities for young explorers at Bronte Creek Provincial Park! Discover amazing features about nature in your own backyard... with the help of a park ranger.

TYKE HIKES – every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:00 am

Last tyke hike for the season August 27^th.

Discover your natural side on a Tyke Hike! Tyke Hikes are designed especially for kids 5 years of age and under, but older kids are welcome too. Your kids will love the hands-on activities and games that will help them learn about Ontario’s wildlife. Children use their senses to find out exciting things that they might normally overlook.

“Children really enjoy seeing wildlife up close” says Taylor, one of the Tyke Hike leaders. “Kids are so happy when they discover that they can find plants and animals everywhere.”

A Park Ranger will meet you just outside the Nature Centre where your adventure will begin. It’s a great way to get some exercise and explore new aspects of the park. All trails and paths used for these hikes are strollers or wagon friendly.

Daily Vehicle Permits are $16.00 per vehicle. No additional fee to participate in programs. No reservations needed.

The Nature Centre is open daily in the summer 10am – 6pm.

Spruce Lane Farmhouse is open daily in the summer 11am - 6pm.

Playbarn hours for the summer 9am – 6pm.

Picnic Shelters all booked up for July!

Bronte Creek has 11 picnic shelters--- and they are ALL booked up for JULY!

Some frequently asked questions and answers:

We have 3 style of Picnic shelter each can hold between 100-150 people, all but 2 come with Hydro, water is close by and they all have charcoal BBQ’s.

They rent for $150 - $200 for the day. Reservation period June19 – Labour Day.

Guests pay the daily vehicle permit fee when they arrive at the gate. The shelter is reserved and available to you from 8am – 10pm (hours of the park in the summer).

Pool fees are separate from the daily vehicle fee.

We have VERY large groups that use these shelters – NO there is no “group” discount.

Plenty of parking in the park.

If you arrange for rental equipment or caterer --- you need to pay for a daily vehicle permit for the company to drop off or pick up the equipment.

If you are just a small family you can still picnic at Bronte Creek Provincial Park… just not under one of the shelters. We have 1000’s of picnic tables and shade trees—these are first come first serve.

You can bring in your own Propane BBQ.

Pets must be leashed at ALL times. –Pets are not allowed in the pool area.

Picnic groups are reminded to explore the park… Nature Centre, Spruce Lane Farmhouse, trails… etc.

We begin to take shelter reservations in the first working day in January! – start planning for next year.

Halton Multicultural Picnic at Bronte Creek!

Bronte Creek Provincial Park Hosts Halton Multicultural Picnic

For the sixth year Bronte Creek welcomed over 1000 visitors in celebration of Multiculturalism in Halton Region. Dignitaries representing Oakville, Burlington and the Region of Halton greeted the picnickers who comprise immigrants from over 100 different countries.

Everyone enjoyed the amateur cultural singers and dancers who kept the crowd entertained throughout the 5 hour picnic. There was plenty of food, cake and juice for the families, many of whom had never visited the park before.

The Halton Multicultural Council organized a series of community booths and activity areas which informed and entertained the visitors. Young visitors could try their hand at Korean games and make crafts from Japan. The Burlington Public Library invited visitors to touch and use implements which early settlers used over 100 years ago.

Tractor drawn wagon rides allowed picnickers to see other areas of the park including the pool, heritage farm and trail system.

Looking forward to next year!

It is a great day to head to the park! The POOL is NOT open... it will be ready for the 26th. The pool has been re-surfaced and painted... it is being filled as I type this. Mother Nature must heat the water.

The nature centre and spruce lane farm house are both open today until 4pm.

The ever popular playbarn and children's farm is open 9-4 -- check out the ducks in the pond!

Take the dog for a walk in the leash free area.

Checkout our new kite flying field --- it is not signed yet --- but you will see a mowed area between the hill and shelter F. If you park in LOT D and walk from the pool along the internal road you will see the area on your left.

We will track our steps, and for every 10,000 steps taken Halton Conservation Authority will plant a tree! Come out and improve your health, and the health of the planet. (add any other information about the walk that you think the person may be interested in – where you will stop – points of interest etc. You could also add a picture, and a map of where you will be walking.) If you can, wear a pedometer. If you need a pedometer all libraries in Halton lend pedometers.

Bronte Creek Outdoor Swimming Pool

Bronte Creek Provincial Park --- Outdoor Swimming Pool

Some little known facts:

Pool opens every year AFTER school is out for the elementary kids.

Why: Generally this is when the weather is typically hot, and our student staff are trained. Also any maintenance that needs to be done on the pool can be done (April and May are sometimes to cold to do the required painting).

Pool is heated by the SUN.

Another reason to have the pool open in late June—otherwise the water is just toooo darn cold.

The Pool is 1.8 acres in size and gradually slopes to a depth of 6 feet. --- think of a really big Man-made pond.
During the POOL SEASON it can be used from 11-6 weather permitting.

This means that IF there is a thunder storm you will be asked to leave the pool and grass area surrounding the pool. This is for your safety… you DO NOT want to be in or around water and high points of land during a thunder storm. Once the storm has subsided you may be allowed to re-enter the pool area. No refunds are issued due to inclement weather.

To access the pool visitors will Pay for their Daily Vehicle Permit ($16.00/ car) at the park gates and then at the pool gates there is a per person charge of $3/ adult or senior and $2.00 per youth ages 4-17.

There is NO seasonal or monthly pool pass—but there is a summer vehicle permit.
We collect the fees at 2 areas (gate and pool) to control the number of people in the pool area. (NLS regulations).

Dogs and pets are NOT permitted in the pool area or the court yard of the recreation complex.

Due to health rules dogs are not allowed in areas of public swimming… this goes for natural beaches as well.

Food is permitted in the pool area however we ask that you avoid using GLASS containers.

BBQ’s are NOT allowed in the Pool area.

Smoking is NOT permitted in the pool area or grass area surrounding the pool. Smokers are asked to use the courtyard.

For safety reasons --- no one wants to step on a HOT BUTT.

You can leave the pool area and are allowed to re-enter the pool on the same day without being charged again.

IF there is a line up to get into the pool (pool is at capacity) you will need to line up in that line.
You must get your hand stamped when you leave.
If your stamp should wear off while you are out of the pool area… a receipt must be shown for us to honor re-entry.

Water temperature ranges between 70-78 degrees Fahrenheit during PEAK season.
Park Store sells snack foods, ice cream bars and general beach accessories.

The park store does NOT sell Bathing Suits.

Bathing suits or a CLEAN CHANGE OF CLOTHES are required to use the pool.

T-shirts over bathing suits are permitted but must be clean.

Life Jackets can be borrowed before entering the pool. Various sizes available.

Water wings will not keep your face out of the water, therefore parents should watch their children closely while using these.
You can bring in your own life jackets
This is a great opportunity to try out your lifejackets or get your kids accustom to using a Life Jacket.

ALL inflatable toys and water toys must be used in the shallower bouyed off areas.

There is a small area where visitors can build sandcastles etc.

Tree Seedlings being planted in 3 Provincial Parks

Ontario Parks is excited to partner with the 50 Million Trees program, Earth Rangers and Trees Ontario to establish tree plantations at three southern Ontario provincial parks. The parks include Bronte Creek near Oakville, Sandbanks near Picton and Springwater just north of Barrie.

Planting is to commence on April[A1] 14, 2010 at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. A total of 100 000 trees will be in the ground by the end of May.

All of these parks were originally forested; however Bronte Creek and Sandbanks have old agricultural fields and some fields that are currently used for agricultural crops. At Springwater, the areas to be planted are former Midhurst tree nursery beds.

Studies have shown that having at least 30 per cent of an area as natural forest is vital for wildlife habitat; controlling erosion caused by wind and rain; and helping to retain moisture to avoid droughts. In urban and agricultural areas, forests often make up much less than that. Most importantly, growing forests are an effective way to capture carbon which helps to slow climate change.

Left untouched, these fields would eventually turn into forests; however, it would take several hundreds of years. Tree species native to the areas surrounding the parks will be planted and they include white pine (Ontario’s Official Tree), red oak, bur oak and black cherry.

While visiting these Provincial Parks we ask that you please stay on established roads and trails to make sure that the fragile tree seedlings are not damaged. In three or four years, you will start to notice many of these trees peeking up out of the grasses.

Tour of Bronte, Sunday April 11, 2010

Park Visitor and Spectator information

The Tour of Bronte will be taking place from 9:30 am until 5pm. The map below outlines the race course which will be covered multiple times for each of the 5 races on the program.

Access to the Park roads and parking lots will be monitored by race volunteers. They will assist you to enter and leave the Parking areas when it is safe to do so. You may be asked to wait for a few minutes while racers pass by a particular point of the course and then proceed to your destination within the park, or the park exit.

Please use caution when crossing the race course and please do not walk on the inner service rd. The walking trails within the park are unaffected by the race, except at road crossing points. Be careful and look both ways before crossing.

Riders will be traveling at speeds up to 40km/hour , usually in large groups, but there will be stragglers and smaller groups of racers on the course. The leaders of the race will be paced by an official lead vehicle with flashing yellow lights.

Past and future Canadian Olympians and International champions will be participating in the race. Please cheer them on as they compete in the Tour of Bronte!

Maple Syrup Festival is finished for another year.

March is just about over and that means that our Maple Syrup Festival is DONE. We had a great year with lots of new visitors, the weather was great for visitors but not so good for syrup production. --- as many of you found out it was TOOOO warm.

The park is open Good Friday and Easter Monday. --- in fact the only day the park is closed in Dec 25.

The weather forecast looks great… the Playbarn and children’s farm is the place to be. New pigs and other farm animals to visit. Count the number of eggs our chickens laid.

Bring a picnic… walk a trail.

Park gates open at 8am… $15.00 per vehicle.

Bronte Creek Provincial Park will be wrapping up the annual Maple Syrup Festival this weekend March 27 and 28, 2010 between 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This will be your last chance to enjoy the annual tradition --- Please allow 2 hours to see and do everything! Guests of the Maple Syrup Festival will be treated to free wagon rides that take you to a heated pancake house where you can enjoy fresh pancakes with pure maple syrup and your choice of crisp bacon or our famous sausages. Guided tours of Maple Lane, watch demonstrations by 1890’s costumed interpreters of how to make maple sugar, explore artifacts from the 1890’s in the Maple Museum. Don’t forget the maple taffy area where you can enjoy the sweet and sticky tradition!

NEW for this year: Victorian Portraits! Dress in Victorian style costumes to have your picture taken in various settings. You get 20 or more black and white images saved on a USB memory stick! $10 sitting fee + $2.00 per person.

Adults and children have plenty to see and do. Play the sap lid game, try to carry buckets of sap with the neck yoke, and complete the maple passport. Explore the 100-year-old Spruce Lane Farmhouse, take pictures of wildlife and our beautiful scenery, and visit our candy shanty and Gift Shoppe.

Family of 4 should budget: $15.00/ car + $40 for other purchases.

Reindeer Corn???

Did you get a little package of corn during your visit to the Maple Syrup Festival?

Please sprinkle this on your lawn… we are hoping that this will attract Santa’s Reindeer.

Yes, we are already planning for CHRISTMAS!! We have a great event in mind. Homestead Christmas – where you can experience all the joys of a traditional Victorian Christmas.

Songs, stories, sweets, crafts, traditions, decorations, visits with Santa etc.

So WHY the Reindeer Corn??? --- we also hope to have Reindeer visit the park during December. The little sacks of corn will bring them to the area?? Well. We hope.

There will be more details regarding the Christmas event posted here… as the details develop.

As for now YOU have a IN… you are one of the few people that KNOW about this event.

Winter at Bronte Creek

Winter?… What winter?

Well at least we have had a good rink season. Cold but not to cold. The outdoor ice rink has a refrigeration system under it… so it can hold the ice through some mild weather. It very neat to be skating outside (to music) when there is little to no snow.

I remember as kids --- we would trek up to our school yard where some local DADs volunteered to set up the boards and flood the surface until the wee hours of the morning. We had 3 rinks… one for the big guys to play hockey and another one for the not so big guys to play hockey. The third one was for us kids to goof around on. We would spend hours out there… then we would head home to enjoy hot coco in front of our black and white TV.

Remember how our toes would tingle as the heat returned to the skin? --- red cheeks and wet hand-knitted mitts. Fun times.

YOU can let your family enjoy those same fun times….only 2000 style.

We have a heated change room, skate rentals, snack bar and we are open 9:30am – 9:30pm Daily! We even have a Zamboni!

Our very last possible day for the rink is Feb 28, 2010. – that is when we turn the compressors off --- if it is cold enough then you can still use the rink… we just won’t be using the zamboni.

3. Toboggan on our BIG hill --- half the fun is getting back up. – you bring your crazy carpet!

4. Cross Country Skiing – you’ll need the equipment but we supply the landscape.

5. Snow shoe – when there is enough snow – you supply the equipment we have the trails.

2015 Pan Am Games coming to Burlington and the GTA

BURLINGTON, ON –Burlington is thrilled that the 2015 Pan American/Parapan American Games will be hosted by a group of Greater Golden Horseshoe area cities including Burlington.

“This is exciting news and a once in a lifetime opportunity for our community to participate in the largest international sporting event in Ontario’s history since the Commonwealth Games were first held in Hamilton in 1930,” says Mayor Cam Jackson. “Although Toronto has been identified as the successful host city, this will be one of the first ever regional Games, a partnership involving many communities.”

The Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) announced the good news at their General Assembly meeting in Guadalajara, Mexico today.

The Pan Am Games are a major international multi-sport event, held every four years for athletes of the 42 PASO member nations. The Games consist of all Summer Olympic sports, plus other non-Olympic events, and serve as an Olympic-qualifier for a number of participating sports.

The Games will bring federal, provincial, municipal and private funding into sports infrastructure for broad community benefits and long-term athletic development in Ontario for years to come. It will mean more jobs in construction and long-term benefits to tourism and the local economy.

In February 2009, the Province of Ontario’s not-for-profit bid corporation BIDCO awarded the city of Burlington the opportunity to host the preliminary rounds of men’s and women’s soccer. Currently, city staff are reviewing both New City Park (on Dundas and Kerns Road) and Sherwood Park (in east Burlington) as possible locations for this event. The city’s current development of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Assets Master Plan includes the recommendation for our city to build a second stadium for up to 1,500 spectators for a whole range of outdoor field sports including soccer.

“This is great news for Burlington amateur sport and city council is to be commended for their strong support of Burlington’s participation,” says Lloyd Keller, president of Burlington Youth Soccer Club (BYSC). Burlington is considered the epicenter of Canadian youth soccer as BYSC annually supports 6,500 summer and 2,500 winter indoor youth soccer players, the largest per capita youth program anywhere in North America.

“The Pan Am and Parapan Games will inspire our youth, transform local amateur sport and create a legacy of world class athletic excellence,” adds Mayor Jackson.

Bronte Creek Helping out Halton Region H1N1

Bronte Creek Provincial Park is assisting Halton Region by supplying much needed parking spaces for regional staff during the H1N1 clinics.

Local residents will likely be aware that the recent clinics held at the regional offices on Bronte Road were overwelmed and caused the closure of Bronte Road for 2 days.

Halton requested the emergency use of our parking lots for region staff so that parking spaces at the regional office could be available for use by clinic patients.

Starting today - Monday Nov. 2, parking lot F will serve as the staff parking for regional office employees.

Bronte Creek is happy to be able to assist for this critial time. Parking Lot F will be used by the region for at least one week.

Visitors will also notice security staff at the park gates. These officers are supplied by the Region, please stop and say hi.

Park hours will remain the same 8am - dusk.

Park visitors will continue to be able to use portions of Park Lot F.

Power shut down for park

On October 15, 2009 the power will be shut off to all areas of the Day-use side (Burloak Drive) between 10am and 2pm.

What this means:

The park will remain OPEN.
The Playbarn, farm will be open.—playbarn will be darker.
Self-serve pay and display machines will not be working.

Calling All those who LOVE Christmas!

Do you love the lights and laughter of the holiday season? If so, Bronte Creek Provincial Park needs your help.

Bronte Creek is planning a brand new Heritage Christmas event and need all the Christmas Spirit we can find. There are volunteer opportunities to help with decorations, costumes, crafts and more!

This is a wonderful opportunity to help bring some holiday joy to your local community.

Heart and Stroke Charity Event this weekend

The Heart and Stroke organization is hosting a charity event on Sunday Sept 27, 2009 at the Green Shelter at Bronte Creek Provincial Park.

We wish the group all the best with their event and hope you will come out to support their cause.

Look for the runners and walkers on the internal gravel loop road on Sunday.

If you are planning on participating you can come early to avoid the line ups at the gate. Parks Gates open at 8:00 am. All cars must have a valid permit so please stop at the gate to speak with the gate attendants.

I am off to Killarney Provincial Park to participate in the Circle of Friends conference in support of the Ontario Parks “Friends Of” organizations.

British Car Day - Sept 20, 2009

The British Cars are coming! A sure sign that summer is over.
Bronte Creek Provincial Park will be invaded by 1000's of British Cars and car enthusiast's. On Sunday, September 20, 2009 between 10am and 4pm.

Public

Park gates open at 8am (cars start rolling in around 8:30 - 9am).
Come early to avoid the line ups.
$15.00 per car (cash, credit or debit) --- cash will keep the line moving faster.
Park in Parking lot A or C
British cars will be on display by GREEN SHELTER.
Bring your picnic or purchase food from the charity food vendor.
Playbarn and children's farm are open for the kids.
POOL is Closed.
